School Accountability Council Meeting

 

Meeting Minutes

February 17, 2010

 Meeting called to order at 1720

 Attendance:  Mr. Torrez

 Agenda accepted for todays meeting

 Minutes from each SAC meeting must be emailed to Mr. Torrez asap for they need to be included in the school newsletter.

 December 17, 20009 minutes were approved.  No official minutes from the January 28, 2010 for it was an informal meeting do to lack of attendance.

 Field Day will be June 9th with Paragon Day being on June 10th the last day of school.

 Kindergarten Graduation will be in the morning on June 10th.

 PBS: Positive Behavior Service

  1. In the last month the behavioral referrals have increased slightly
  2. Saff received training Aug 2009 and new staff trained. They made posters for around the school promoting good behavior though out the school and with each other.
  3. STAR stands for:  Safe. Truthful, Accountable, and Respectful.
  4. 3 tiers of recognition :  A. teacher-student

                                                      B. blue cards

                                                      C. star student awards

 NWEA/MAPS growth data:

  1. Students tested in both reading and math and science may be added in the future.
  2. Each class must work to meet their target ranges.  Each class  must increase their growth in both reading and math.
  3. 3rd to 7th must prepare for the csap testing.

 Cross walk and fencing an area for the children protection was discussed with the landlord and he is not willing to fence in an area. He will come and see what solutions can be made.

 Space update: 

  1. Challenger Space Center field trip for the 6th and 7th graders.
  2. Planetarium at Mitchell High School for the younger grades.
  3. 5th graders to have a person from the NASA Space Foundation come in to co teach about Robotics and will have an Astronaut come in to speak.
  4. Space Day Fair later in the spring. People who work in the space field all areas to come in to speak with the students

 Technology:

  1. PTO fundraiser to try and collect $3,000 in order to get new computers for classrooms.
  2. School to order robotics for the 5th thru 7th graders for them to build them and program them.
  3. Possibility to get netbooks computers (cloud) this will be a recommendation to the board in order to get more computer for the same price.

 Arts:

  1. Paragon
  2. Fine Arts Center field trips
  3. 6-12 kids will have a scholarship to the School of Arts
  4. March of 2010, Silent Auction where the teachers will do a project and it will be put up for auction and raise money for the school

 PTO:

 1.  Fundraisers in order to get new computer

2.  The next skate city outing will be from 6pm to 8pm and there will be no Bus service for there has been just too many problems with getting the students on to and off the buses. We have not had much success in getting parents out to help. It was suggested that parents and teachers who do go to functions bring along a camera and take pictures at these functions so the school can post them.

 Board of Directors:

  1. The next meeting will be Tuesday Feb 22, 2010 in the library at Star at 6pm.
  2.  The board is thinking of making up teams to help with the getting and processing data. Needing to get parents, teachers and sac members teamed up with a board member.
  3. Adams Elementary is still on the table but is not looking very good.
  4. The board is trying hard to see what options is available for space for the up coming school year for we are already in tight quarters and not much space to grow.  If we are to add an 8th grade where will it go.

Dist 11-DAAC: The biggest item is the Budget cuts for the 2010-2011 school year. How are the schools to function and maintain with now a 18 million dollar cut. The next DAAC meeting will be held on Wed Feb 24th. Everyone should be in attendance.

 New Business: How do we keep the teachers we have now.  We have had a huge teacher turn over and would like to be able to keep the teachers what incentives are there especially with budget cuts in the future. 

 Old Business:

              1.       Speakers that we were to get from a business will not longer be available for it has been found that these speakers are no longer in proper working order.

              2.       We will be getting a new portable sound system that can be moved.

              3.       Feb 18 the 3rd grade will have finished the csap testing.

              4.       Traffic control is getting much better in the afternoons but there are still problems in the mornings.  People are stopping and getting out of their carrs and walking the students to the door which is blocking the other cars dropping off.
